Field Stone

Whats The Use?

Fieldstone is a type of natural stone that’s found scattered on or near the surface of the ground, often collected from fields or old farm properties. Because it forms naturally instead of being cut or shaped by machines, every piece is unique. The stones vary in size, thickness, and color, usually showing shades of gray, tan, brown, and sometimes hints of moss or lichen that give them a weathered look.

In landscaping, fieldstone is loved for how real and grounded it feels. It has an old-world charm that fits well with rustic or natural designs. You’ll often see it used for garden borders, retaining walls, patios, or walkways. When laid dry without mortar, it creates a relaxed, organic look. When mortared, it feels more structured and timeless.

Fieldstone is also durable. It holds up well to weather, doesn’t fade, and doesn’t require much upkeep once installed. Its rough texture helps it grip the ground, which makes it good for stepping stones or sloped areas where smoother stone might shift.

Because each stone is irregular, it takes some patience to fit the pieces together. That’s part of the appeal though, it feels more like a craft than a construction job. The result looks natural, as if it’s always been part of the landscape.
