Creek Rock

What’s The Use?

Creek rock, also known as river rock, is a type of smooth rounded stone that’s been shaped by moving water over time. It usually comes in a mix of natural colors like gray, brown, tan, and soft red. The stones can range in size from small pebbles to several inches across.

Creek rock is popular in landscaping because it looks natural and blends easily with almost any outdoor setting. It adds a calm, grounded feel to gardens, walkways, and water features. Unlike mulch, it doesn’t break down or need replacing every year, so once it’s in place it can last for decades with almost no maintenance.

It’s also great for controlling erosion. The weight and shape of the stones help hold soil in place, especially on slopes or around areas where rainwater tends to wash things out. Creek rock also helps with drainage. Water can flow freely through the gaps, which makes it useful for things like dry creek beds or around the foundation of a home where you don’t want water collecting.

If you lay it over landscape fabric, it can keep weeds from growing through while still letting water reach the soil. It also stays cooler than dark mulch, which helps protect nearby plants during hot weather.

People often use creek rock for dry creek beds, borders, around ponds, or as a base for pathways. It’s a simple way to make a yard look more natural and intentional.
